The Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) has implemented a film showing the important achievement of a decade of brilliant work.
The Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) is a multidisciplinary organization that investigates major issues concerning the genesis, progression or treatment of cancer. The CCRC mission is to provide discovery and innovation that may be applied to the prevention of cancer or to the development of more effective treatment strategies. The CCRC foundation was based on the unshakeable belief that cancer is a problem that can be resolved and that in Cork it is possible to create the capability to make significant contributions.
Cancer research is a continuum from basic investigation through to clinical application. Innovation is deemed to be relevant to knowledge and clinical application. Electrochemotherapy is an example of successful development of an effective treatment strategy for skin cancers developed in Cork within a project which was funded by the European Commission, under the Fifth Framework Programme’s (FP5, 1998-2002). The project named ESOPE involved four important European cancer centers, the clinical study involved 110 patients, treating 170 individual tumor nodules. Nearly three-quarters of these nodules completely disappeared, while another 11% partially regressed, making the objective response to the new treatment an impressive 85%. The results of the ESOPE project are now confirmed by the day to day clinical practice of electrochemotherapy applied with the Cliniporator (IGEA SpA, Carpi, ITALY).
